Monday 8 November 2010

  • - It’s easy to get so engrossed with a project that you work with blinders on. During Research & Development, “R” is often undertaken exclusively at the start of a project, then “D” takes over with an all-consuming life of its...

  • - My daughter has been working on the classic "invention," assigned by her engineering teacher: build a better mousetrap. However brilliant I think her invention is (and it is ... she is talented), I don't think we're going out for a...

Monday 18 October 2010

  • - This is such an exciting time to launch a new business or product. Fourteen years ago, when we first started Catalogs.com, there was no Twitter, no YouTube, no blogs. What an amazing comparison I am doing as the whirlwind of...

  • - Social media is great. It’s fun. It’s enlightening. It’s interactive. But social media is like the ocean: you should assess your ability to surf before you dive right in. Know your strengths. Know your weaknesses. Be ready for the big waves.

Thursday 25 March 2010

  • - It is 7:45 am, and 29 female senior level executives are gathered in a law firm conference room. They are sitting around a 30-foot board room table, writing feverishly, as Miami Herald columnist Cindy Krischer Goodman gives tips on balancing work, life, and happiness. Cindy has a 25+ year career in journalism, has her own weekly column (which is now syndicated throughout 100+ newspapers nationwide) and is CEO of Work Life Balancing Act.

Wednesday 17 March 2010

  • - My heart is breaking. My daughter is crying, and all I want to do is protect her from being hurt. Yet, the lessons of “hard knocks”, “irrational people” and “unrealistic expectations” can be taught with one simple phrase, “Step-back, analyze the situation, and move on to bigger and better things.”

Monday 15 March 2010

Monday 1 March 2010

  • - A couple of years ago, a friend emailed me, partly horrified, partly entranced. She had just downloaded Google earth, searched her address, and there she was, in her yellow shorts, pushing the lawn mower on the front lawn, frozen on the Web, at her less-than-finest.

  • - Tiger Woods Bad for Business? My opinion on the whole Tiger Woods dabacle is this - It's bad enough that he cheated on his wife who he has fathered two children with setting a bad example for fans, sportsmen and young people, but from more of a business standpoint, he didn't even take into account the list of multi-million dollar corporations who have invested in him and his squeaky clean image.

  • - Why Zappos Catalog needs Qualified Leads to succeed. Zappos has turned a corner and decided to enter a world of competition. As a professional who has almost 14 years under her belt in the cataloging industry, I can confidently state that there are only two ways in which a new cataloger like Zappos will be successful in competing for holiday business via a catalog: #1 The cataloger MUST have pre-qualified consumers. This means the consumer must actually request the catalog (this means to ASK/ SEEK) the catalog. #2 The cataloger mails to its own internal database of shoppers.

  • - Tools for Teaching Contest Entries Pouring In. Catalogs.com staff is buzzing with excitement, as more than 450 teacher entries have already been submitted in our first week. It’s either because our contest "Tools for Teaching” is so cool and enticing, or it’s indicative of hard economic times and the tough realization that public schools are feeling the federal governments budgetary cuts.

  • - Why our Women's Leadership Retreat Rocked. This past Sunday morning, I participated in something extraordinary. It was not a usual Sunday morning, where you might leisurely wake-up, enjoy the morning coffee and read the New York Times. Instead, I awoke at 7:00 am and quickly did last minute preparations to welcome 32 highly accomplished women. You see, I hosted at my own home a women’s division Board of Directors retreat, where we spent 7 hours fine tuning our executive skills, learning new ways of time management and organization, and exploring creative alternatives to raising money to help the needy.
