Personal Thoughts

Friday 29 April 2011

  • - I am surfacing from under a pile of resumes. I'm not complaining, because I appreciate how fortunate Catalogs.com is to be in hiring mode. We are actually trying to fill three positions. Lots of business owners are still feeling the...

  • - Whether you've been to a press run one time or one hundred times, you can't miss feeling a combination of excitement and trepidation. This is the point at which a creative project is ready to "hit the road" ... when...

  • - If you slept late yesterday, ate cinnabons, lounged with the dog or watched football with a bag of chips, you weren’t as productive as we were. Even though it was hard to ask our team to abandon their weekend activities,...

  • - First, I have to be honest, it's not really "my" iPad. It's the family iPad. Although we do have a difficult time wresting it out of my husband's hands. For him, iPad is all business, and the workday never stops....

  • - My daughter has been working on the classic "invention," assigned by her engineering teacher: build a better mousetrap. However brilliant I think her invention is (and it is ... she is talented), I don't think we're going out for a...

  • - Yesterday evening, I attended the annual installation of officers and awards ceremony for a very large Jewish philanthropic organization (of which I happen to be on the board of directors). Everything was going as planned, until one fatal mistake.

Monday 24 May 2010

  • - I am reading a post that popped up in my morning scan of socialmention*. At first, it sounds vaguely familiar. Then very familiar. There is another one. Familiar. Very familiar. OMG. Has someone plagiarized my posts?

  • - My daughter’s recent induction to the National Junior Honor Society made me very proud. The ceremony was serious, with candles, school administrators and the middle school students – all girls, actually – in fancy dresses.

  • - The rev of the printer makes me feel pangs of eco-guilt, but in my defense I printed the 20 resumes on the back of my daughter’s graded geography homework.

Tuesday 30 March 2010

  • - Social media is great. It’s fun. It’s enlightening. It’s interactive. But social media is like the ocean: you should assess your ability to surf before you dive right in. Know your strengths. Know your weaknesses. Be ready for the big waves.

  • - It is 7:45 am, and 29 female senior level executives are gathered in a law firm conference room. They are sitting around a 30-foot board room table, writing feverishly, as Miami Herald columnist Cindy Krischer Goodman gives tips on balancing work, life, and happiness. Cindy has a 25+ year career in journalism, has her own weekly column (which is now syndicated throughout 100+ newspapers nationwide) and is CEO of Work Life Balancing Act.

Monday 15 March 2010

  • - I have been digesting Chris Brogan’s blog post, My Love For Blogging, from last week. It is a great post. Meaty. Challenging. Inspirational. I don’t usually print what I read on the Web, in the interest of being Green and sensible. Chris’ post, though, I printed, and then sat with a pen, and read, making squiggly underlines and little arrows, like I used to in school.

  • - A very dear friend of mine is enjoying a public relations coup, and I am celebrating on her behalf. I can totally relate to her joy: it is so exciting to read about your company, your inspiration and your hard work, in someone else’s words.

Monday 1 March 2010

  • - A couple of years ago, a friend emailed me, partly horrified, partly entranced. She had just downloaded Google earth, searched her address, and there she was, in her yellow shorts, pushing the lawn mower on the front lawn, frozen on the Web, at her less-than-finest.

Friday 26 February 2010

  • - I was paying bills yesterday afternoon. I like to be prompt. I like to be accurate. I had a question.

Tuesday 2 February 2010

  • - A colleague recently lent me a book, with an inviting red dust jacket and intriguing title, The Go-Giver. It’s a little book with a big message, she promised.

  • - Giggles, laughs and ever lasting friendships! There is nothing as precious as life-long friendships. How many of us are lucky enough to boost, brag and revel in friendships that began in the 3rd grade? Or other friendships that began in college and continue to last 20++ years?

  • - Tiger Woods Bad for Business? My opinion on the whole Tiger Woods dabacle is this - It's bad enough that he cheated on his wife who he has fathered two children with setting a bad example for fans, sportsmen and young people, but from more of a business standpoint, he didn't even take into account the list of multi-million dollar corporations who have invested in him and his squeaky clean image.

  • - Why our Women's Leadership Retreat Rocked. This past Sunday morning, I participated in something extraordinary. It was not a usual Sunday morning, where you might leisurely wake-up, enjoy the morning coffee and read the New York Times. Instead, I awoke at 7:00 am and quickly did last minute preparations to welcome 32 highly accomplished women. You see, I hosted at my own home a women’s division Board of Directors retreat, where we spent 7 hours fine tuning our executive skills, learning new ways of time management and organization, and exploring creative alternatives to raising money to help the needy.

  • - Catalogs.com new mascot is the cat's pajamas. As you know, we are amping up our public relations here at Catalogs.com and decided it would be a beneficial move to integrate a mascot. Originally we were going to hold an official press conference for the public to officially meet the new face of Catalogs.com, but I couldn't wait to let the cat out of the bag.

  • - Express Yourself - How to lower your American Express Credit Card Fees. Are you tired of paying outrageously high credit card transaction fees? Of course you are. Who loves overpaying for anything, especially when the economic climate is continuing to deteriorate by the hour? I'll even haggle over the price of a Big Mac. Well dear bloggers, instead of sitting back and signing off another outrageous check, I decided to do something about it.

This eight year old boy will have a Thanksgiving that is worlds away from his past seven Thanksgiving holidays.

  • - Chair Yoga for the Wheelchair Bound. I’ve blogged on numerous occasions regarding the fact that she’s an amputee, a breast cancer survivor and now, a recent lung cancer patient in a wheelchair. My Mom has neck and back pain, leg pain, shoulder pain, even her pains have pain. While I was reciting my "Oms" during our class I thought about Yoga and how it would benefit my Mom. She could really use some serious stretching techniques that she can do sitting in a chair.
