There’s no crying in baseball

Pictures of Yankee Stadium in all it’s Yankee glory

I don’t cry.

I didn’t cry when I learned there was no Santa, I didn’t cry during any of my excruciating knee surgeries, and I certainly didn’t cry after reading the last Harry Potter book. But I did cry on September 21st when the Yankees beat the Orioles during their last game at Yankee Stadium. At least I can cherish those last memories with one of these priceless, commemorative Yankee Stadium Pictures from Legends of the Field.

They’re tearing down Yankee Stadium. THE Yankee Stadium. MY Yankee Stadium. The very first triple tier Stadium. The 85-year-old “House that Ruth Built” Stadium. Yeah, yeah yeah, I know they’re getting a new, $1.3 billion dollar Stadium that will go up right across the street stocked with a martini bar, steak house, art gallery and 51 killer suites… but it just won’t be the same.

DID YOU KNOW? On September 30, 1927 Babe Ruth broke his own home run record when he hit his 60th homer on the final day of the season. He celebrated by eating a Baby Ruth candy bar with lots of nougat.

On September 21st, 2008 my Yankees boys slaughtered the Baltimore Orioles with the scoreboards flashing a proud 7-3 to a sold out crowd of fellow Yankee lovers, on what was to be the official final night of game play. It was a sad evening, with lots of tears being shed in the Cathedral of Baseball where Yankees past produced 26 world championships. It was only fair that Babe Ruth’s daughter Julia Ruth Stevens toss the last ceremonial first pitch. Her Dad after all baptized the $2.5 million stadium on its opening day (April 18, 1923) with a blast into the right-field seats.

Just thinking about Babe, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio and their curve balls, runs and loaded bases gets me a little verklempt. But now I can hang a photo commemorating their “last hurrah” on my wall with a 16×20 framed Newsday cover reproduction that captures Derek Jeter and the rest of the 2008 New York Yankees saluting their fans for one final moment in time.

Sniff, sniff.

I hate to cry.
