Some ways to wear a scarf so that it can complement an entire outfit

Scarves as accessories are often overlooked and rarely used to full capacity. Despite the many different ways to wear a scarf, in today?s fickle fashion world, scarves are not worn as often as they used to be. Perhaps, the fear of ending up like dancer, Isadora Duncan, whose fondness for flowing scarves caused the freak car accident that claimed her life in 1927 lingers like a ghost in the air of almost obsolete accessories.

Or maybe people don?t wear scarves they way they used to is just because unlike most things in the world today, scarves aren?t fast; they require some time and thought in order to complement an attire to the ultimate degree. Truth be told, scarves have been around for centuries, some dating back as far as 1,000 BC as representations in Chinese sculpture.

What are some different ways to wear a scarf?

There are many different ways to wear a scarf. They can serve as head coverings, shawls, accent pieces, belts, and even as garments. Scarves can be glamorous, alluring and elegant. Just close your eyes and picture some scenes form movies with Grace Kelly and Lana Turner for example; both wore scarves often to enhance their lovely looks. Scarves are made in many different sizes and fabrics, ranging from heavy wool knits to the finest silk weaves. Today fashion scarves are usually composed of silk rayon or acetate, which renders a shimmering finish. Cotton and wool are also commonly used, which make for heavier scarves.

Scarves as headwear

Some cultures demand that women cover the heads as a matter of propriety and this is one of the more traditional purposes for which scarves have been used. Practically speaking, the scarf is still used to protect the head/hairstyle and helps one to ?look good? in the process. The key to understanding the different ways to wear a scarf lies in knowing some of the different tying methods.

1- Sleek, stylish and/or uncertain

When you don?t really know what you are doing and its cold out and you want to look sophisticated, the easiest way to tie a scarf is to bring the ends together, folding it in half. Drape the folded scarf in back of your neck and let each end hang in the front. Find the loop in the fold and pull the other end through it.

2- Folding square scarves

Don?t try this method with scarves of other shapes for it will not work. Fold the square in half to form a triangle and stretch that triangle in front of your neck (upside down, with the triangle pointing downward). Then wrap the ends around the back of your neck and let each end hang in front.

3- Tying patterned scarves

If you are feeling a bit more bohemian, wrap the scarf around your neck by stretching the fabric in front of your neck and around the back. Let each end hang freely in the front.

4- Hollywood Classic

If it is a glamorous look you seek, with silk or satin scarves you can wrap the scarf around your neck, leaving one end in the front and the other in the back. Voila, you got it!

Whichever you go, reconsider your scarves as the accessories they were meant to be. Learn some of the different ways to wear a scarf and most important of all, have fun with them!
