Who wears wigs? A lot of people wear wigs

Who wears wigs? Virtually anyone that wants to can wear a wig. There are those who wear wigs because they have lost their hair, either due to chemo or alopecia areata. Other womwen wear a wig because of holy reasons; Orthodox Jewish women wear wigs because of religious dictates.

Actors and actresses often wear wigs. Many African American women chose to wear wigs because their hair type breaks easily and is difficult to grow long. Women with short hair wear wigs to change their look, others wear wigs to change their hair color temporarily.

At Halloween, people wear wigs as a part of their costume!

Wigs can be made from human hair or synthetic hair. Synthetic wigs tend to get a little frizzier than human hair wigs and you canít put color on them. Human hair wigs are much more costly but you can treat them as if they were your own hair.

RELIGIOUS BELIEFS

Orthodox Jewish women cover their hair with a kerchief called a tichel or with a hat or wig. They cover their hair because married women are not to show what is considered beautiful after their marriage. Hair is not to be shown in public once one is wed. Very extreme ultra Orthodox Jewish women shave their head and wear a tichel. Hasidic and Yeshivish Jewish women wear wigs.

Covering the hair is a token that the Jewish woman is married and it identifies her as such. The procedure of covering hair is called tzeniut. This practice encourages modesty and isnít intended to make a married woman look ugly. When covering the hair this creates a mental wall between the wearer and strangers. She is inconspicuous, still pretty but not available.

A wig allows a woman to show hair but itís not her hair so she preserves her privacy (her real hair) while also preserving her attractiveness. The Jewish believe that inner beauty requires modesty in order to thrive as well as modesty.

AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN

It was a big deal, recently, when Oscar nominated actress Viola Davis (The Help) ditched her wig for the awards ceremony. African American women often choose to wear wigs, for many reasons.

According to Cheryl Thompson, author of Black Women and Identity: Whatís Hair Got to Do With It? African American hair requires far different grooming and styling techniques because it is curlier, thicker and often frizzier than Asian or Caucasian hair. Sometimes itís simply easier to wear a wig.

She notes that in Africa in the 15th century, hairs styles represented a personís rank, status, marital state, ethnic identity, wealth, age and religion. When a black woman was enslaved, if she worked in the field, she hid her hair, while those who were house servants wore wigs that looked like the wigs their owners wore.

In the 1900s Madame C J Walker received a patent for the pressing comb or hot comb, which was the first hair device of this nature to be marketed to the black community. It straightened hair. Years later, relaxer was introduced which was less damaging to the hair than the hot comb but still straightened the hair. In the 1980s, African American women started wearing weaves where synthetic or human hair is weaved into the womanís own hair.

Wearing hair naturally or in a Ďfro was considered by some African American women to be a CLM or career limiting move. Some people consider Afros or dreadlocks to be a political statement and not appropriate for the workplace so black women covered their natural hair with a wigs. However, more and more black women are now going the natural route and not wearing wigs, although wigs remain very popular among this sector.

CHOICES

A lace front wig is a type of wig that has a lace cap. You can see through at the part in the hair on the top of the wig. It appears that you are seeing the scalp. These particular wigs are affixed as closely as possible to the hairline. There may even be baby hair on the hairline which makes the wig look even more natural. Lace front wigs can do damage to hair because they are tied separate strand by strand to the hair cuticle. But, this results in a natural looking hair.

When a person is bald, he or she can choose from a plastic suction wig that is made to adhere to the head. The one drawback to this type of wig is that it is hot.

Before you purchase a wig, you must measure your head because head sizes do vary greatly.
