Sonar Technology

Sonar stands for SOund NAvigation Ranging and is basically the technology of sending electronic pulses or echo sounding out from a transducer. These electronic pulses are sent out as sound waves and measure the speed of the sound as it moves through the water. Water usually moves relatively quickly through water and is only slowed down by different objects as they move through the body of water. Fishermen are hopeful that these objects turn out to be a school of fish.

This echo sounding lets fishermen know exactly how far it is from the bottom of the water or whatever the water bounces off of. Sonar fish finders are actually reflecting these sound waves off of the fish’s gas-filled swim bladders back to the surface of the water. These swim bladders differ greatly in how they bounce these pulses back to the sonar fish finders, so it is not easy to detect the type of fish that may be underneath your boat or even the size of the fish.

Using Sonar

Commercial fishermen have made excellent use of sonar fish finders to greatly increase their number of catches. But even hobby fishermen have begun to increase their yields by using this technology. Some die-hard enthusiasts denigrate the use of sonar because they claim that it takes away the sport of learning which kind of fish prefer particular kinds of water. Plus you will have to decide if using sonar fish finders meets your fishing needs.

You may also find that sonar will help you navigate unfamiliar fishing waters and may even help you avoid different kinds of obstacles in the water. However, most fishermen will admit that the best use of sonar fish finders is to, well, find fish!

Serious Fishermen

Most serious fishermen eventually decide that it is prudent to purchase sonar fish finders. When you decide that you, too, are going to make use of this convenient technology, you will first need to decide what your budget is for this purchase. Costs can range from around $100 for a simple depth reader, black-and-white fish finder to thousands of dollars for advanced LCD or CRT models.

Some models even include mapping and navigation systems. More expensive models do not necessarily guarantee advanced effectiveness. They may simply have more detailed displays. Clarity will depend on the number of pixels the model has, and you will pay more for a higher number of pixels. If you are under budget constraints, rest assured that simple sonar fish finders will accurately and reliably indicate where the fish are in a body of water.

Sonar fish finders are an irreplaceable tool for those fishermen who do not want to waste time searching for fish and instead want to just get to the part where they try to get them on the hook. They will cut down on the time you spend staring off your boat and waiting for the bobber to go down so that you can try to reel in that big one. However, this technology only tells you where the fish are. They don’t tell you how to catch them.  For help with that part, those of us who are incompetent fishermen will just have to wait for someone to invent a new technology.
