A trip to the farmer’s market will yield dozens of choices in apples. Whether you prefer yours crisp and tart, or mild and sweet, apples are the perfect ingredient in fall dessert recipes. Start with this old-fashioned, but oh so yummy recipe from Land O’Lakes.

Old Fashioned Apple Crisp

Preparation time: 20 min  
Baking time: 25 min 
Yield: 6 servings

6           medium (6 cups) apples, peeled, cored, sliced
3/4        cup firmly packed brown sugar
3/4        cup uncooked old-fashioned oats
1/2        cup all-purpose flour
1           teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2        cup cold butter (not margarine!)
             Vanilla ice cream, if desired

Heat oven to 375?F. Place apples into ungreased 9-inch (2-quart) baking dish.

Combine brown sugar, oats, flour and cinnamon in medium bowl; cut in butter with pastry blender or fork until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle sugar mixture over apples. Bake for 25 to 35 minutes or until apples are tender and topping is golden brown.

Serve warm with ice cream.

Cookie and apple cider

One of the best things about fall is the smell of spices, whether it’s from a pot of hot spiced cider, or these delicious cookies from the South Carolina Department of Agriculture.

Spice Cookies

1 15 oz. pkg. raisins
1 quart pecans, chopped
2 cups sugar
1 stick butter
1 tsp. each (allspice, cloves, cinnamon)
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup milk
3 eggs
2 cups flour
 
Mix all ingredients and drop a half teaspoon at a time. Bake at 375 degrees for 8 minutes.

The rich taste of sweet potato pie

The southern counterpoint to the pumpkin pie, a sweet potato pie is a delicious way to end an autumn meal. The University of Florida offers this, as well as other fall dessert recipes.

Sweet Potato Pie

2 large sweet potatoes, cooked and mashed
1/2 cup skim milk
1/2 cup maple syrup
1 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp nutmeg
2 eggs

Boil sweet potatoes until soft.
Mash potatoes in a large mixing bowl.
Combine mashed sweet potatoes with eggs, syrup, vanilla, milk and nutmeg. Mix well.
Spray 9-inch pan with non-fat cooking spray.
Pour mixture into the prepared pan and bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour or until knife comes out clean.

Even if autumn is months away, you can enjoy the delicious taste of fall dessert recipes. Whether it’s mid summer or deep in winter, autumn is as close as a sweet and spicy dessert.
