Thanks in large part to his fascinating reality show on television; Bear Grylls has become a leading figure in wilderness survival circles.
Using his experience in the British SAS, Bear has climbed Everest and faced incredibly difficult circumstances on his many treks. Now, he has paired up with the gear specialists at Gerber, who have been in the business for more than 70 years, to create the “ultimate” range of survival products. Here are my favorites …
For those adventurers who picture themselves as the swashbuckling hero, the Parang Machete is the perfect choice. This updated example of the traditional jungle knife features a black stainless-steel blade, solid construction, ergonomically designed grip, lanyard, and survival instructions.
This locking knife can be worn easily on your sturdy belt or on a lanyard. The serrated blade is made from carbon-dense stainless steel. The rubber grip is ergonomically shaped and can be used in either hand due to its ambidextrous design. Like most of Bear’s products, the knife comes with his “Priorities of Survival” pocket guide.
Since Bear is British, this product is called a Hands-Free Torch™, known to the rest of the world as a headlight. Extremely handy for times when you need your hands for other things, this light features an adjustable elastic headband, storage for extra batteries, and three light settings.
The best water-resistant flashlight is small and bright. Sturdy construction offers an interior space for storing waterproof matches (which are included). You should look for a flashlight that is able to light your way for 20-36 hours.
6. Scout Essentials Kit
You should never venture into the wilderness without being adequately prepared for whatever Mother Nature might throw your way. This well-rounded kit is a great way to make sure you are ready for anything. It has been meticulously assembled to cover every survival need and includes a water-capturing case, first aid kit, waterproof matches, mini flashlight, small knife, compass, and survival guide.
For your all-important water needs, look no further than this inspired canteen. Taking the blueprint of the classic military model and tweaking it for modern use, the bottle is BPA-free with a leak-proof top. The nested aluminum cup has two handles and can be used for boiling water.
4. Fire Starter
Sometimes, it just isn’t so fun to hit two rocks together for hours in the desperate hope that one of them will cause a spark to fly into a carefully formed pile of twigs. Luckily, the Gerber® Bear Grylls Survival Series™ offers a handy fire starter. Designed to last for years, it features waterproof casing, an emergency whistle, pocket survival guide, SOS instructions, and lanyard.
3. Survival Knife
The Ultimate Knife™ is said to be exactly what its name claims, the last word in survival knives. The blade is made from high-carbon stainless steel and has both a serrated and smooth edge. Crafted to offer excellent grip, the handle is ergonomically designed. It also includes a pommel that doubles as a hammer, an emergency whistle, fire starter, and integrated sharpener.
Sometimes you need more than a knife, and sometimes it can be stressful to search your bag to find each and every tool you need during your expedition. That’s where the Ultimate Multi-Tool comes in handy. The solid stainless-steel construction houses pliers, plain and serrated blades, a saw, various screwdrivers, bottle and can openers, scissors, wire cutters, and more.
