Lauded as loyal companions to the elderly, lap warmers for royalty, or cute toys for the famous, miniature dogs have a diverse history of domestication reaching back into ancient times.

Reviled by some for their yappy, excitable natures, these tiny pooches are beloved by many and, indeed, are some of the most popular breeds in the world.

Overall, they pack a lot of personality into a little package and do not require the same amount of food and space as larger dogs. Indeed, they use far less resources, from less space-demanding accessories such as smaller beds to less intrusive home modifications, like doggie doors for small pups, making them an economical and often apartment friendly choice.

Relative of the popular Bichon Frise and Maltese breeds, the Havanese is the official dog of Cuba due to the fact that it is the only native breed on the island.
