There was no football at the first Thanksgiving, at least not on television, but that doesn’t mean there weren’t any snacks.

The first and possibly best snack introduced to the pilgrims by Native Americans was popcorn, the fiber-rich food that provides its own sound effects. While some people can eat it plain from an air-popper, most prefer a little butter and salt and almost no one can turn down tasty snacks with popcorn. Here are some of my favorites.

Kettle corn is another old-fashioned popcorn treat, traditionally made in cast iron kettles with popcorn, oil, salt and sugar. It’s popular at fairs and anyplace where the smell can attract a hungry crowd.

Invented in 1893 for the first Chicago World’s Fair, Cracker Jack became famous in 1908 when it was immortalized in the song “Take Me Out To The Ballgame.” The molasses-flavored candy coated popcorn and peanuts still tastes great, even if the prizes aren’t as good as they used to be.

Even if the movie is bad, the popcorn is always good when eaten in a movie theater. Serving popcorn during films started in the Great Depression as a way for theater owners to make more money – today it counts for 40 percent of movie theater net revenues. Now that’s an extra-large bucket of profit!

For purists who want a sweet corn snack with no other added ingredients, caramel corn is the choice. Molasses, brown sugar and butter make it sweet and a secret process makes it non-sticky – as anyone who has tried to make their own at home will find out!

With a name that makes little boys giggle, Poppycock is a popular popcorn snack made originally with popcorn, almonds, and pecans covered in a candy glaze. Other combinations are available and the name Poppycock.

Chocolate-covered popcorn is a light candy snack that provides both fiber and the heart-healthy benefits of dark chocolate – at least that’s what I keep telling myself as I gobble handfuls of this sweet treat.
