How to make hummus
Making hummus at home is easyItís easier than you think to make hummus at home.
Long a staple in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean restaurants, hummus has become a common fixture in American grocery stores, too. But store-bought hummus can be expensive, and the taste is often disappointing. Thatís why weíve gathered a few simple recipes to show you how to make hummus at home.
Letís start with a basic hummus recipe:
(Youíll need a food processor or blender to make this recipe)
1 15-ounce can of unseasoned chickpeas, drained
Juice of Ĺ a fresh lemon (or 1 tsp reconstituted lemon juice)
1 finely chopped or pressed large clove of garlic
2 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil, with extra for drizzling
3 tablespoon tahini (sesame seed paste, available in most grocery stores and all Mediterranean or Arabic markets)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground
1 teaspoon sumac (optional, available in Mediterranean or Middle Eastern markets)
Cut vegetable, pita bread or crackers for dipping
- Combine all ingredients (except the sumac and extra olive oil), in your processor bowl
- Blend until smooth, adding additional olive oil if too try.
- Adjust salt and pepper to taste.
- Pour the hummus in your serving bowl or onto a lipped plate
- Drizzle with olive oil then sprinkle lightly with sumac
- Serve with veggies, crackers or bread.
Now letís get a little fancier
Youíve probably seen a variety of hummus flavors in the grocery store. Now that youíve mastered steps to make basic hummus, youíre ready to learn how to make hummus with tasty additions
- Try drizzling flavored oils on top of your finished hummus. Walnut oil, basil oil and rosemary olive oil are all great choices.
- For a spicy hummus, add chopped jalapenos, a couple of teaspoons of harissa, or a Ĺ teaspoon of cayenne before blending the ingredients.
- Blend in Ĺ cup of pitted green or black olives for a tangy twist. Top your finished hummus with chopped olives before drizzling with the olive oil. (Omit the sumac for this version)
- Oil-preserved sun-dried tomatoes are another great flavor to add to your homemade hummus. These flavorful additions add a lot of taste, so go easy. Add only 1/8 to ľ of a cup before blending, and garnish with a few strips.
- Give your hummus a fresh lemony taste with lemon-infused olive oil, some grated lemon peel or a squeeze of lemon juice over the top.
Not a fan of chickpeas?

As with the last recipe, youíll need a food processor or good blender to make this.
1 large can cooked black beans, drained
2 large finely chopped or pressed garlic cloves
4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, with extra for drizzling
Juice of two lemons, about 4 tablespoons
1 tablespoon white wine vinegar
1 teaspoon ground cumin
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
- Place all of the ingredients the bowl of your food processor, and process until smooth.
- Place in serving bowl or on a lipped plate. Drizzle with olive oil, and serve with pita, chips, crackers or raw veggies.
This black bean hummus is also great on burgers, in wraps or on bruchetta toast rounds.
