5 ways to ditch a bad blind date

By Catalogs Editorial Staff

Most of us have been there. You get all dressed up, made up, perfumed up, and even shaved in great expectations for a blind date. The friend who set you up promises that he is a “wonderful guy” and that you two have “so much in common!” But, from the moment you open the door, you can tell that it’s just not going to work out between the two of you.

You run out of topics of conversation before you even arrive at the restaurant, and you don’t know how you are going to make it through dinner, much less the movie you have planned. When you find yourself in this kind of awkward situation, try any of these five suggestions to ditch that blind date!

  1. Eat everything on your plate within seconds of it being served. While the thought of this may make you sick, it is sure to turn your date off almost immediately. No girl looks attractive with a mouth full of food. This works especially well if you have ordered something messy, like pasta; so it is best if you plan this out before you place your order. If your date asks if you are in a hurry for any particular reason, you can either say you aren’t in a hurry and act insulted that he would think so, or you can make up a really creative story about trying to beat your own record or something like that.

  2. Eat off your date’s plate. No one likes to have someone they barely know eat off of his plate, so this is a sure-fire way to turn him off. If you want to go the extra mile, try eating a lot off his plate; and don’t even ask first. When you are finished, comment on how bad the food is.

  3. If he is paying, order the most expensive item on the menu. Not only does this show your lack of dating etiquette, but it will make you appear high-maintenance (if you really are high-maintenance, then you may just do this one naturally!).

You can take this suggestion even further by telling him, the waiter, the people at the next table, and everyone else who can hear just how bad the food is, after you have taken just a single bite. End this horror by saying something to him like, “Man! They really ripped you off!”

  • Talk on your cell phone throughout dinner. Even though today’s technology etiquette may allow for a quick answer of your cell during dinner, no one expects you to carry on an in-depth conversation. If your best friend calls to ask how things are going with the date, look at him, roll your eyes, and begin talking really quietly so that he cannot really understand what you are saying. Needless to say, he’ll get the hint! Out of these five ways to ditch a blind date, this may be the absolute rudest, so use with caution.

  • Program a cop-out. Take your cell phone escape to the next level by programming it to call you with a ready excuse. For a small fee, some cell phone carriers will offer a service to have an automatic call come at a particular time with an automated voice prompt telling you what to say. You can pick it up and be prompted to say something like, “Don’t try to get up, Grandma. You just had your hip replaced.”

Contact your cell phone company and ask about an “Escape-a-date” service. Or ask a friend to call at a specific point in the evening to give you an emergency “excuse” to leave. You can always ignore the call if the date is going well!

In today’s fast-paced world of speed dating, online dating and phone dating, you may have ample reasons to experiment with one of these 5 ways to ditch a blind date. However, take heart. People still do find that “right one” all of the time, and the next time, it just might be you.

Don’t enlist any ditching methods before you are absolutely certain that your date does not have any long-term potential, because first impressions can be deceiving.

And, if he simply orders another item from the menu when you turn your nose up at the first, high-priced one; or he offers to help you pick up your Grandma, you just may want to “unditch” the date after all.
