Food

The first step in putting a good party together is to figure out whether or not you are going to be serving a meal, or simply going to have snacks that people can munch on as they mill about, meeting other people and enjoying each other’s company.

~

Once you have decided on what you are going to eat, you need to decide how you are going to present it. People would be surprised at how many of the little details go into making a party actually stand out as one people will remember.

Most hosts are tempted to simply put out a couple of bowls of food and some paper plates and call the whole thing good. If you go the other route and actually use some fine china or at least beautiful dishes, the get-together can actually stand out in people’s minds a little better.

Music

Even if your party is going to be a dinner party where people are going to be encouraged to simply talk and enjoy each other, there should be some sort of music playing. If you are going to have a more raucous party, then you are going to want to have better, upbeat and louder music.

If you happen to have an old school sound system complete with giant sub woofers and surround sound then you are all set. If you haven’t outfitted yourself with the most expensive sound system available you don’t need to worry. An Apple TV device can now be found for less than $100 in some markets and you can hook it up to any TV that has an HDMI jack (which is most of them these days). Teaming it up with your WiFi connection you can play your entire iTunes music collection through your television, giving you an instant home theater feel.

Themes

You don’t need to have a theme in order to be able to say you know how to throw a good party, but if the theme is pulled off it certainly won’t hurt. The key to knowing whether you should go with a theme is knowing if the people you plan to invite will actually welcome a theme night. Some crowds would much rather just go to a laid back get together, while others love dressing up and letting it all hang out.

Obviously, a costume party is a theme that most people tend to go with, but you can actually go more specific and try out something like a “Down-Under” theme complete with Aussie foods, decorations, and music to go along with the theme. You can also go with something like a gangster or “throwback” theme that has people dress up in specific costumes.

You are walking a bit of a tightrope if you go with a theme. Some people could come away congratulating you on a great idea, while others will wonder why they ever agreed to attend in the first place.
