This particular disorder means that when people enter into REM sleep, they lose the usual bodily paralysis that most of us have. In other words, the body will actually act out the actions a person is undergoing in their dreams.

While most people will wake from a nightmare and immediately realize that the scares they were experiencing weren’t real, night terrors can last a bit longer. Children are especially susceptible to these and may not even become fully awake. The child may look alert, with their eyes open but they can still be screaming or inconsolable. They also may not recognize their parents or family members.

Sleep walking can actually mean doing anything as though a person was awake,while they are unconscious. Despite the somewhat comical explanation of what this syndrome actually is, it exists. Among the top sleep disorders that are known, this syndrome causes people to suddenly hear a loud noise. Usually manifesting as a bomb exploding or a cymbal crash, it will wake the person from a dead sleep. Scientists are unable to pinpoint what causes it.

Bruxism is actually one of the most basic disorders on this list and one of the most common. As many as 40 million Americans grind their teeth or clench their jaws while they sleep. This can lead to serious damage to the jaw or teeth.

Once thought of as nothing more than a hoax, Restless Leg Syndrome is a disorder in which the person cannot keep their leg or other limbs from jerking or twitching, keeping the person awake. Nowadays there are drugs that will stop the nerve endings from firing.

This particular problem is when a person will actually engage in sexual acts while they are actually asleep. The issue is considered completely separate from sleep walking, but has some of the same symptoms such as the sufferer appearing to be wide awake.

Sleep Apnea is basically a condition where your body actually forgets to breath every now and then. This is usually caused by an airway being blocked when you lie a certain way.
