Flames burst through the cave and the brave warrior cautiously creeps forward toward either a tremendous victory or impending defeat. Snarls and stomps ring out as the fight grows closer when finally the beast comes into sight. Towering overhead, the intimidating monster and hero lock eyes and the battle ensues.
Outmatched in size and strength, the fearless warrior manages to defeat the mythical beast and lives to tell the tale of his struggle with a mighty dragon.
These winged fire-breathers have been the subject of many fantasy stories and though usually wicked and villainous, some twist the image of these gargantuan serpents into lovable characters. A mixture of both, here is a list of the top 10 legendary movie dragons.
10. Saphira from Eragon
The most recent on the list, Saphira and Eragon embark on a magical journey to elude evil beings while carrying out a legend of the Dragon Riders. Another movie based on a fantasy novel, Eragon’s dragon is created with stunning digital effects.
9. Devon and Cornwall from Quest for Camelot
These two goofballs are actually one dragon (with two heads) and they lack the abilities of other dragons. Their antics and their dislike for each other are the highlight of this animated feature.
8. Winged Beasts ridden by The Nazgul in The Lord of the Rings
Appearing in the second two Lord of the Rings movie, these hideous creatures are referred to as Winged Beasts controlled by the evil Sauron. Visually stunning and disgusting, these dragon-like creatures only appear in a few scenes, but deserve a spot on the list.
7. Yowler from Dragonworld
A young man cuts a deal with a crooked businessman and his dragon becomes a theme park attraction. This story makes for a great family film as the young man sets out to free his friend and teach the trickster a lesson.
6. Draco from Dragonheart
The last dragon, with the familiar voice of Sean Connery, Draco heals a young future king with part of his heart. Years later, the king turns out to be evil and it is up to Draco and his befriended dragon slayer to save the kingdom, but at a cost. This dragon will win your heart.
5. Vermithrax Pejorative from Dragonslayer
In this 1981 flop turned cult classic, a medieval kingdom is at the mercy of the vicious dragon, Vermithrax Pejorative. This villainous tyrant requires that virgins be sacrificed in order to keep the country safe, and it is up to a sorcerer’s apprentice to save the king’s daughter, who is next in line.
4. The Hydra from Jason and the Argonauts
Ground breaking stop-motion animation brings this seven-headed beast to life in the 1963 fantasy classic. Jason defeats the monster only to then be faced with a skeleton army that is formed from the Hydra’s teeth.
3. Elliott from Pete’s Dragon
An orphan boy’s only friend, Elliott is a goofy companion that helps Pete escape from his adoptive parents and the two hide from a doctor who seeks to exploit Elliott.
2. Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty
Known more as an evil fairy, Maleficent transforms at the end of the movie into a fierce black dragon and battles Prince Phillip. This is a legendary battle in Walt Disney history.
1. Falkor from The Neverending Story
Furry and lovable, this luckdragon accompanies Atreyu on a difficult journey and provides him with transportation and acts as a charm to help him along the way. Unlike other dragons, Falkor has no wings and resembles a dog.
