Knowing what foods cause heartburn can help you avoid burning discomfort

Some women are only victimized by heartburn while they are pregnant. Many feel that this is sufficient agony and should exempt them from the "horribleness" of acid reflux the rest of their lives. Many non-pregnant people also suffer daily from heartburn - which is nothing to scoff about. If your heartburn is doing a number on your life then you are going to have to take some aggressive steps to curtail it. Knowing what foods cause heartburn is a big part of preventing heartburn pain. There are foods that you must avoid if you are a heartburn sufferer.

Some favorite foods may be the culprit. There is a host of foods that cause heartburn and which people who suffer from heartburn must eliminate from their diet.

This is going to make you sad but ... ditch the coffee. A couple of cups in the morning may not bother a heartburn sufferer, but a person with chronic heartburn will not be able to chug coffee all day long. This is going to cause heartburn. Caffeine in iced tea, soda and other beverages and foods can contribute to heartburn.  

Avoid booze. Again, so sorry for your loss. If you already have acid reflux, and you drink alcoholic beverages you are asking for a raging case of heartburn. Alas, you can drink a little but stay away from after-dinner drinks completely because you are just inviting heartburn to rare up.  When you eat a lot and drink in conjunction with the meal, or immediately afterward, you may be in for the burn of your life. Alcohol opens up the sphincter which enables acid to rise freely.

Some people eat peppermint candy after a meal, thinking it will soothe their bellies, when, in fact, it is the wrong thing to do. It may sweeten your breath, but it isn't going to benefit your innards if you have a tendency towards heartburn. Peppermint relaxes the sphincter muscles which enables stomach acids to come back into the esophagus.  

Considered classic heartburn inducers are tangy citrus fruits, such as orange juice, grapefruit and oranges because they are quite acidic. If you consume these foods on an empty stomach you may be in for big trouble.  

Spicy foods can set you over the edge as can foods that are high in fat, including cheese, avocados, a rib eye steak, and nuts. When you consume a lot of fat this prevents your stomach from emptying its contents as quickly as it should, and you end up with a distended stomach, and that puts pressure on the esophageal sphincter, and heartburn is likely to ensue.  

Yes, unfortunately, chocolate is also an offender. Chocolate relaxes the sphincter which lets those stomach acids back into the esophagus and the result is heartburn.  

When you drink carbonated beverages this causes your belly to distend, which increases the pressure on the sphincter and prompts reflux.  

Things you can do if you are a heartburn sufferer, include propping yourself up with a pillow at night. Use gravity to keep the acid down. 

Don't eat right before you got to bed because sleeping on a full stomach puts pressure on the stomach valve at the top of the stomach. The valve is supposed to keep acid from leaking back into the esophagus. If there is too much pressure on the valve, the stomach acids are going to seep into the esophagus and you know what happens then!

Don't exercise strenuously right before going to bed. Exercise earlier in the day.

If you have recurring heartburn it may be an indication of something serious, and you need to report this to your physician. The symptoms of a heart attack are somewhat similar to the sensation of heartburn. You may be suffering from GERD, which is a condition of the lining of the esophagus, which is also referred to as Barrett's esophagus. This needs to be treated by your doctor.
