My cousin’s name is Max. The poor little guy has the same name as half the dogs and cats in his neighborhood. Not that Max isn’t a cool name, it is. We like it so much in the United States and the United Kingdom that it’s been the most popular pet name for several years now.
Max continues to dominate the list of the top 10 dog names for the fifth year in a row according to a 2007 Veterinary Pet Insurance poll of 450,000 clients. The name Max is moving up the ranks in human names as well.
Pulling Dog Names from Baby Books
Even when we’re not naming our dogs Max, there’s an increasing trend to adorn our canine babies with the same names we’re christening our human children. The top 10 dog names list and our list of favorite baby names are starting to look similar.
Top 10 Dog Names for 2008
1. Max
2. Molly
3. Buddy
4. Bella (Isabella ranks fourth in the top children’s names according to the Social Security Administration)
5. Lucy
6. Maggie
7. Daisy
8. Jake
9. Bailey
10. Rocky
Six Degrees to Max
I have to say I love the name Max and I’m glad it’s my cousin’s name. But Max has a friend named Bella, who has a dog named Lucy and a cat named Rocky. Rocky is the name of my electrician whose dad is named Buddy, which is also the name of my neighbor’s black Lab. I wish I was making this up. Now if my friend’s daughter Molly buys a dog named Jake, then the circle of life will be complete. Pet and human names are merging because our pets nowadays are too important to us to be given such old-fashioned and decidedly dog-like names. Most people tend to view their furry friends as close companions. The American Pet Products Manufacturing Association says that 74 percent of households actually see their pets as members of their families. This is most likely due to the changing dynamics of our culture, families and home lives.
Gone Are the Days of Fluffy and Fido
In days gone by families were closer to each other and dogs were dogs. Their names were Spot or Smokey and they didn’t have their own wardrobes and doggie day cares. They certainly didn’t have filtered water dishes or Doggles with UV protection, but I view these as safety necessities. For some it feels as if their pets take care of them as much as they take care of their pets. And if our canine pals are not really emotionally attached to us, then they put on a good act. Yes, the good acts might be so we’ll give them food, but we don’t care. They seem happy to be around us, and that’s what’s important. The trend in today’s culture of naming them as we do people shows our significant appreciation for them as companions.
Call the Paparazzi: Here Come Snoop Dogg - Bad Puppy
Another trend that reflects their new elevated status is naming them after celebrities like Posh and Elvis. We’ll have to see where the celebrity name trend goes. No doubt we’ll reach beyond Rocky, Rambo and Tinkerbell. Although the top 10 dog names list doesn’t reflect this, there’s always the strategy of waiting until you know your dog’s personality before naming it. Of course, yelling out Bad Puppy, or Trouble probably won’t sound too good when you’re with your furry family member in the park. But I must say, I’d name my Golden Retriever Hyper over Lance or Madison any day.

hey,
I do have a dog his name is fluffy and i’m proud with it and I like him as i like a regular human being but I’ m not with the idea of calling dogs after human names …we can show our appreciation in another way! It’s the same thing as calling my son Flee or Brownie !!
One of our dogs is named JavyLopez. The other is Rocket Clemens ( I should probably chang his name now!)
my dogs name is maggie and her mom is molly
I have four dogs and two cats the dogs are bryant, killian, holly, and mac and the cats are nova and paticents the only one i didnt name is holly she came with that name. however there is nothing wrong with naming your dog whatever name fits your particular puppy. who’s to say what are dog names and what are human names anyway???!!!!

I have a chocolate lab named Maggie- Had a black one named Bailey, and when i was a kid we had a mutt named Spooky.
I also have TONS of cats: Carley, Juliet, Jasmine, Roxie, Thurman, Munson, Snoozer, Tiny, Trouble, and I had a beatiful white long haired named Casper also.
I can see the trend changing though as i look at my list of pets. The “human named ” ones are from within the last 3-4 years while the older animals tend to have “pet” names.
I have a dog.
My three dogs: Sasha, Bandit and Kira
Other faithful canines gone by: Ziggy, Candy,Dane and Spiker Doo; Prince and Laddie
yes, dog names have changed. As a girl, we had Sparky, Mitzi, Blackie, Precious, Ajax, then somewhere it began to change; now we have Lilli, Jake, Lucille, Corey, Ruby.. The cats though are still cats; Jupiter, Jinx, Cookie, BlackJack, TeddieBear, Dusty I and II, I wonder why? My son Jacob didn’t like the fact that we rescued a dog named Jake so he got a cat and named it Joeykitty (one word) to get back at us and Joe our youngest. and a kitty named Jimmy Dawson for his friend.
i have a boy great dane and his name is brutis it does not matter what the dog or cat name is just lovethem give them food and care thanks
Over the years, I’ve had a myriad of cats. Their names ranged from Jasmine to Buttercup, to Flufflybutt and so on. Our oldest cat, her name is Sugar. She had a brother named Spice. I used to have a cat named Jack, and I was going to name his sister Jill, but my mom put her foot down. Her named turned out to be Sissy. Here, I’ll list all the names I remember:
Jasmine
Buttercup
Garfield
Sugar
Spice
Bugs
Mama Cat
Valentine
Fluffy Butt
Curious Georgette
Moe
Bubba
Willow
Lily
Iris
Gizmo
And we have a dog named Koda. Only Sugar, Moe, Bubba, Iris, Lily and Willow are alive at the moment. So… We’ve had an interesting mix of different names.
the NUMBER 1 name out there is………………………. :) ***EVER*** :)
my old dog was holly hunter ruff ruff b
but our new dog is just simply bindi sue b
Любопытно! Надеюсь продолжение будет не менее интересным…
I’ve been told,by numerous Vet’s that giving a pet of any kind,a name was very crucial,to there,developement,personal-identity,and overall happiness. It’s just as important, that a pet have and know his/her own, name as it is,that they have, their own, personal, space,or area of your home, where, they can keep their toys, sleep on their blanket,in their cage etc.The same is true for both cats and dogs. They need to feel that they have a place, they can feel that is there’s,and Yes,cat’s will tend to,more than dog’s,to mark the boundaries of his home, where if the Dog,has been,house-broken,already,will,mark his territory, outside,on a tree or bush,in the yard. They already knew,no pp inside the house.so they marked the entire house as their territory.I miss those guys. They weren’t any certain breed, actually, they were muts, that I adopted, while living in Atlanta,But,they were, fraternal, twins.and I called them,George and Gracie.Of course,no one from my demographics, understood, their names, and wanted me to call them,Will & Grace,a rude comment on my preferred, chosen,Lifestyle,as well as an embarrasment for not knowing whom the original,George and Gracie were. They were one of the very first early, stars of the sit-com,era of showsmixed with a little reality show.Because, the entire show, was supposedly shot,in real time,in the home of George Burnns and his First wife,Gracie Allen,Burns. And,without a doubt,or script, she was undoubtedly, the funniest, woman,to ever be on tv.And it was all for real, how she thought, how she behaved and what she said. She didn’t need a script, they had Gracie..and this is the show and the person, that cornered the market on the joke,”Say,Good-Night,Gracie”and Gracie would say,” Good Night, Gracie”
Можно и поспорить по этому вопросу, ведь только в споре может зародиться истина. :)
