Gone are the days when the purpose of a rug was for keeping floors warm and protecting high traffic areas. Today, floor rugs are an important part of a room’s theme and overall décor. The right floor rug brings aesthetic value, comfort and lasting beauty.

Simply put, area rugs can give a room a focal point.

To open up a smaller room and create a maximum impact in a minimal amount of space, select light colored rugs with uncomplicated designs for an atmosphere of spaciousness. If you want to create the feeling of intimacy in a large room, use darker colors and detailed patterns to give the room a cozy feeling.

Rugs are also instrumental in creating “themes” in living areas. Southwestern, floral, or oriental floor coverings along with complementary accent furnishings create the sought after look.

When choosing an area rug, keep in mind there are two types of rug materials to consider – synthetic and natural. Natural materials are either plant or animal. Synthetic materials are man made. Here are some tips to keep in mind when choosing a floor rug that suits the purpose of the room it is in.

Synthetic rugs — polypropylene or nylon. Man-made synthetic rugs provide water and UV-resistance plus holds color well. But both synthetics are excellent at masking dirt and would be an excellent choice for high traffic areas such as hallways or outdoor living areas.

Plant-based fibers such as sisal, jute, and bamboo are not only biodegradable but made from renewable resources. Especially good for sunrooms or outdoor use because they shed water easily, plant-based fibers are difficult to clean. They may last only a few years with heavy use, but are a great value.

Cowhide or leather is a natural fiber and is quickly becoming a favorite for decorative rug accents because of their soft suppleness. With the tanning process, these rugs are long lasting, durable and bring a warm feel to a den or family room.

Other natural materials such as cotton and wool bring plush comfort and style to a room. The warmth of wool is naturally stain resistant and will last for years when properly cared for.

Size and Placement Matters in Floor Rugs

If a rug is too big, it masks the beauty of the room’s natural flooring. If you have polished wood floors or decorative Spanish tile, part of the appeal of the room is lost by covering it with an oversize rug. On the flip side if a floor rug is to skimpy, it brings no real value to the room and will appear to be nothing more than an after thought.

For the bedroom, comfort and thickness should be of the utmost importance when choosing a rug. Allow approximately a three foot width along side the bed. A decorative floor covering at the foot of the bed is also a nice touch. For a formal look in the living area, furniture should be entirely on or off the rug. However, if you would like to create a more casual appearance, place furnishings half-on, half-off the floor rug.

Rug Pads for Lasting Durability and Comfort

Rug pads provide comfort, prevent slipping and add years to the life of the rug. With less slippage, the rug stays put and relieves friction to fibers. Most are made of synthetic materials such as PVC or latex. For a compatible fit, buy a pad that’s a few includes smaller than your floor rug.

With proper care, a floor rug can bring a subtle tone, brighten, or add a spacious feel to a room. Choose a rug not only for comfort, but welcomes you into the room as well.
