Now, let’s get down to the serious part; i.e., what are you going to buy the object of your affection? Traditional gifts like chocolate covered strawberries or flowers are fine, but if you happen to be on a tight budget, don’t worry; there are many creative Valentines Day gift ideas that are not that expensive.

Remember, the thoughtful gift is the one that counts. Take the time to listen to clues for what she or he really wants. Perhaps a book that they mentioned or, if they’re a collector, something new for their collectibles shelf. Most guys would far rather have a pair of tickets to their favorite sports team than a pair of boxer shorts with a red heart emblazoned on his crotch! And, many girls would rather have tickets to a show than an impersonal box of chocolates. (She’s probably on a diet anyway, so why make her feel guilty?)

1. Create a love box

A wonderful way to celebrate the holiday is to gather together all the things that you can find from your special times together, such as theater tickets, a memento of your first “date” movie, photos of your honeymoon or a special occasion, the dried corsage or program from your prom, and of course, any love letters that you might have sent to one another. Present them in a pretty box (acid-free photo storage boxes work great) and enjoy looking at them together and reminiscing about past times. This is surely one of the more creative Valentines Day gifts you could give to someone you love.

2. Make love coupons

Here’s one of the inexpensive, very thoughtful and creative Valentines Day gifts suggestions: Make a booklet of love coupons. You can do this with a computer and printer, or you can draw them yourself. The coupons can be redeemable for a candlelit dinner, a massage, a night of snuggling, or any other sexy or romantic idea. You can also send your coupons via email: Some ideas for the coupons are:

– Good for an evening of romance

– Good for one free wish

– Good for one kiss

– Good for one sunset dinner

– Good for a weekend getaway

– Good for a night of chocolates and love

– Good for one sensual act

– Good for one romantic dinner

3. Make a CD of some favorite songs

As you are making it, write a little note about each song. Choose songs that remind you of your significant other, or ones that are special to both of you.

4. Plan a romantic vacation

It doesn’t have to be far from where you live, the goal is to have a change of scenery. Bring a picnic dinner, some candles, and sparkling cider for a romantic night alone right in your room. Check online. There are many B&B’s that are not expensive, but offer you the chance to have a romantic interlude without the pressure of being at home. If not a B&B, rent a hotel room with a Jacuzzi. Remember to bring your bathing suits…or not! Order in some room service, and enjoy your time together.

Another great idea would be to take a romantic weekend cruise to the Caribbean. You and your loved one would be able to split the cost so you’re not left broke. Taking a cruise is a great way to get away with someone and is truly a relaxing experience which will create countless memorable memories.

The history of Valentine’s Day

It is thought that the holiday probably derives from the ancient Roman feast of Lupercalis (February 15), also called the Lupercalia. In an annual rite of fertility, eligible young men and women would be paired as couples through a town lottery. Briefly clad or naked men would then run through the town carrying the skins of newly sacrificed goats dipped in blood. The women of the town would present themselves to be gently slapped by the strips and marked by the blood to improve their chances of conceiving in the coming year. Talk about “touchy/ feely”!

As Christianity came to dominance in Europe, pagan holidays such as Lupercalia were frequently renamed for early Christian martyrs. In 496 Pope Gelasius officially declared February 14 to be the feast day of two Roman martyrs, both named Saint Valentine, who lived in the 3rd century. However, neither Saint Valentine seems to have an obvious connection to courtship or lovers!
