This recipe is indeed my mom’s beef stew recipe.  The simple seasonings and hearty vegetables combine to create a classic American meal.

2 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 teaspoon paprika
2 pounds stew beef, cut into 2″ chunks
2 cups water
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
3 tablespoons Heinz 57 sauce
2 bay leaves
1 large onion, quartered
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon fresh ground pepper
3 large carrots,  cut into 1/2″ slices
3 ribs celery, chopped into 1″- 2″ pieces
4 medium potatoes, cut into quarters then once again

Directions

Heat oil in a large heavy pot
Add paprika, stir
Add stew beef chunks and brown.
Add water, Worcestershire sauce, Heinz 57, bay leaves, onion, salt andpepper. 
Cover and simmer 1 1/2 hours, stirring once or twice
Add carrots, potatoes and celery to the pot
Stir and cook 30 minutes, or until vegetables are tender
Serve hot over cooked noodles or rice

~Slow Cooker Beef Stew

If you want to come home to the aroma of a hot and bubbling beef stew, ready for your your bowl, this slow cooker version is the answer.  It’s how to cook beef stew in today’s busy world.

Ingredients:

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 clove garlic, minced
2 bay leaves
2 pounds beef stew meat, cut into 1 inch cubes
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 onion, chopped
3 potatoes, diced into 1/2 pieces
4 carrots, sliced medium thin
1 stalk celery, chopped into 1″ pieces
1 1/2 cups beef broth

Directions

  • Pour olive oil into the crock pot and tip to coat the bottom.
  • Add all other ingredients in the order listed, stirring after each addition.
  • Cover, and cook on low setting for 10 to 12 hours, or on high setting for 4 to 6 hours
  • Serve over butter egg noodles
