Maryland is the best of so many worlds, all rolled up into one little state.
It’s close enough to D.C. to share in the energy of the nation’s Capital. It’s even close enough to New York to make weekend theatre and museum trips an option. It’s the waterfront big city energy of Baltimore. But it’s also home to some of the most beautiful rolling countryside in the northeast.
So if a move to Maryland is in your plans, you may need some help in choosing the right spot to call home. That’s why I’ve created a list of the 10 best places to live in Maryland. Ready to find your new home?
It’s also a great place to call home, with its convenient METRO service into D.C., an abundance of top-notch restaurants and one of the most friendly populations on the East Coast. Access to mass transit and nearby I-95 makes getting in and out of the city for work, travel or recreation easier than in most other American communities.

9. Ellicot City
If you’re looking for a place that’s close enough to Baltimore to commute, but with a quieter feel, Ellicot City might be just the place for you. From the restored historic buildings that dot the community to the downtown filled with antiques, one-of-a-kind boutiques and eclectic restaurants, it’s a comfortable and easy place to call home.
According to the experts at Money Magazine, “The nearby National Security Agency and the Fort Meade Army base together account for more than 8,000 jobs, and the government plans to move thousands more positions there by next year. Baltimore and D.C. are within commuting distance (30 and 60 minutes, respectively). ”
Housing is high here, but that’s to be expected in the D.C. commuting area. Single family homes list for an average of $555,008.

Located along the route between Baltimore and Pennsylvania’s state capital of Harrisburg, Lutherville-Timonium offers a welcoming suburban community mixed with the horse-country, rural feel of PA. and nearby Hunt Valley, all within easy commuting distance of both Harrisburg and Baltimore.
Residents here are also an easy drive from the first Metro station into D.C. (Greenbelt), making it a great location for people who want to enjoy the cultural, entertainment and restaurant options without paying “inside the Beltway” prices for homes. CNN rated Eldersburg as one of the Top 100 Places to Live, in part because of it’s an easy commute to Baltimore or D.C., and in part because despite recent suburban-style growth, this town still retains some of its rural feel with honesty stands and farmers markets.
In the Baltimore/D.C. area, housing is never a bargain, but this city is more affordable than most. In this town, a single family home averages $424,683.

This historic town that played a role in both the War of 1812 and the War Between the States is also a great place to live in Maryland today. Residents of this central Maryland town enjoy a lively schedule of arts, history, technology and ethnic events. The town is home to the National Museum of Civil War Medicine, 40 miles of the Appalachian Trail and a vibrant downtown Arts and Entertainment District.
Its unique location also means that the big city is within a few hours drive — New York, D.C., Baltimore, and Philadelphia are all close enough for regular weekend visits or even day trips. Housing here is affordable by area standards, with a single family home selling for about $329,581.

If a your ideal new home town would be a mix between Silicon Valley and the green peacefulness of an English shire, Montgomery Village might be just the place for you. Conveniently located between Baltimore and Washington, D.C., this town offers residents access to the large (and still expanding) technology region between the two cities, plus the green rolling hills, lakes and small town-feel of a rural setting.
Community bonds are strong here, and local events keep kids and adults alike involved in art, music, civic events and more. Housing is a bit higher here, though, with single family homes hitting a mean price of about $388,769.

If a lower cost of housing is high on your list, you may find your new Maryland home in Hagerstown. With an everage single family home price of only $210,494, this town serves as both a central government district and a welcoming place to live within commuting distance of D.C. and Baltimore.
Hagerstown is an old Maryland town, dating back to a founding in 1762. Today it serves as a gateway to the Appalachian Trail and the historic Antietam Battlefield, as well as the all of the arts, music, technology and history Maryland has to offer.

Another Money Magazine winner in the Top 100 Places to Live ranking, Crofton is a planned community 20 miles from Washington.
This town is known for its excellent schools and well though out design with a mix of residential and low-impact businesses. Most residents work outside the city in nearby D.C. or other “inside the Beltway” communities. Crime and unemployment are very low — a plus for the Washington area which often faces both in high numbers.
There is a price for the location and excellent amenities. Housing is expensive, with the mean price of about $449,332, and many homes over the million dollar mark.

Known for its signature crab cakes and as the former home of writer Edgar Allen Poe, this city by the Chesapeake Bay is not only a popular tourist attraction and shopping destination.
The city offers residents a dynamic lifestyle, with access to world-class arts, exceptional science museums including the National Aquarium. The population is diverse and inclusive, with a place for everyone. Housing is generally more affordable than in outlying areas with an average price of about $$200,853.

1. Hunt Valley
This unincorporated area outside of Baltimore is my personal choice for “where I would buy my new home if I won the lottery”, so I had to include it in the top ten. Think gently rolling hills, big trees, and winding roads, along big properties with horses grazing in their incredibly green paddocks. Houses set way back from the road. Summer concerts in the park the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Steeple chases and polo on the weekends. And Baltimore just a hop, skip and jump away for nightlife and restaurants.
Hunt Vally is also home to corporate giants like McCormick Seasonings, BreakAway Games and Sinclair Media, and within an easy commute to Baltimore’s business enterprises. But all this beauty comes at a price. Although there are less expensive properties available, the average single family home lists for about $910,000.
